How Spurgeon Got Saved
Charles Spurgeon was an overweight Baptist preacher in London 100 years ago. The more I read about him, the more I read of his sermons, the more I stand in awe of his gifts. He preached to 4,000 at each service on Sunday for 38 years at the Metropolitan Tabernacle. He is known today as the greatest soul-winner of the last century. What is not so well known is the theology behind his power. It was the theology of sovereign grace in Romans 8:28-30. He recounts the decisive day when he was sixteen:
I can recall the very day and hour when I first received those truths (of election and effectual calling) in my own soul when they were, as John Bunyan says, burnt into my heart as with a hot iron, and I can recollect how I felt that I had grown on a sudden from a babe into a man that I had made progress in Scriptural knowledge, through having found, once for all, the clue to the truth of God.
One week-night when I was sitting in the house of God, I was not thinking much about the preacher’s sermon, for I did not believe it. The thought struck me, How did you come to be a Christian? I sought the Lord. But how did you come to seek the Lord? The truth flashed across my mind in a moment I should not have sought him unless there had been some previous influence in my mind to make me seek him. I prayed, thought I, but then I asked myself, How came I to pray? I was induced to pray by reading the Scriptures. How came I to read the Scriptures? I did read them, but what led me to do so? Then, in a moment, I saw that God was at the bottom of it all, and that he was the Author of my faith, and so the whole doctrine of grace opened up to me, and from that doctrine I have not departed to this day, and I desire to make this my constant confession, I ascribe my change wholly to God.
I recommend the new biography of Spurgeon by Arnold Dallimore. It is simply called Spurgeon, and was published last year by Moody Press. We need to read about how God has mightily used people who embraced the sovereignty of grace!
Working for God
Joe had always been a helpful neighbor and so the lady next door asked him if he could drive her little son to the hospital. Actually, Joe had other plans but he did not know how to say no. So he sat the little boy onto the car seat, fastened his seat belt, and started off on the 50-mile trip to the hospital. As they were driving along, the little boy slowly turned to Joe and asked: “Are you God?” Startled, Joe said: “No.” The boy continued: “I heard my mommy asking God for some way to get me to a doctor. If you are not God, do you work for God?” Joe replied: “I guess so – sometimes. And now that you ask, I will be doing it a lot more.”

The Secret To Super-Sized Prayer
Someone finally started looking at us Americans and realizing that a bunch of us are a whole lot bigger than we ought to be. And I don’t mean we’re too tall! You know? I know what the weight battle is all about – I know it’s hard, I know your weight has nothing to do with your worth, but it can have something to do with your health. I guess all the talk about our weight and our health has even affected some of the fast-food restaurants – who might conceivably have something to do with the “widening of America.” Oh, they’re changing, having healthier offerings and reducing fat and sodium. And then, not too long ago, they started to get rid of “super-sizing it.” Remember, we’d go in and they would ask you after you’d placed your order, “Would you like to super-size that?” They might as well have asked, “Would you like to super-size you?” In many places, there’s no more super-sizing.
I want to have A Word With You today about “The Secrets of Super-Sized Prayer.”
I’m happy to report that God is still in the super-sizing business. Except He’s asking, “Would you like for Me to super-size your life?” He does it through super-sized praying – believing God for things only He can do. Maybe you’re in one of those “got to be God” times right now – it’s got to be God or it’s not going to be! Then you’re ready for the secrets of miracle-making prayer. They’re actually found in 1 Samuel 1, beginning with verse 10, our word for today from the Word of God.
Hannah is childless. She desperately wants a child. Her prayer, which results ultimately in the birth of Samuel, one of Israel’s great leaders, contains those secrets of super-sized prayer. The Bible says, “In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord. And she made a vow saying, ‘Lord Almighty, if You will look upon your servant’s misery…and give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life…And she kept on praying to the Lord.”
Let’s stop for some of those secrets of super-sized praying. First, problems turned into prayer. You can turn a problem into many things: worry, resentment, self-pity, negativity, or heartfelt prayer. That’s the mountain-moving choice. That’s what Hannah did with her problems. The psalmist said, “I pour out my complaint before Him; before Him I tell my trouble” (Psalm 142:2). Admit your bankruptcy in the situation, and He’ll open up His bounty. Then, the second secret Hannah shows us is pursuing your all-powerful Lord. She calls God “Lord Almighty” – that’s mightier than the mightiest possibility. When you come to Him, come to Him as the one who’s got the whole world in His hands.
There’s a third secret in this prayer, too – pre-surrendered results. As much as Hannah wants a son, she says, “Lord, if You give him to me, I won’t hang onto him. He’s Yours.” And she kept that promise. God will trust you with what you want so much when you give it back to Him in advance. Otherwise, when you get it, you may make an idol of it or let it come between you and your Lord Almighty. It has to be pre-surrendered. Notice, too, another secret Hannah shows us – persistence in the Throne Room. She “kept on” praying. Faith grows, your spiritual muscles grow, as you wait on the Lord and keep coming to Him trusting Him for your answer.
One final secret of super-sized prayer – Hannah said of her prayer, “I was pouring out my soul to the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:15). God loves it when we come to Him, not with our usual script and our religious self, but all hanging out with our real, true emotions. The deep contents of your soul become the substance of your prayer. Passion in your praying is one of those powerful prayer secrets.
The end of the story? God gives Hannah Samuel, she takes him to the temple and gives him to the Lord’s service, and God gives this woman who couldn’t have children three more sons, and two daughters! And that name she gave her little answer to prayer, Samuel, means “heard by God.” Everywhere Samuel went, he was a walking testimony to a prayer-answering God, and so are you.

Advice for the Newly Baptized
My Advice for the people who are getting Baptized….Graduated
First of all, I cannot tell you how trilled I am to see twenty more youth being added to the members of our church. I want to congratulate you, and wish you the Blessings that only God can give. Statistics say that in 5 years, 50% of youth will leave the church, and that’s me being a little soft, because they said more will. Have you ever asked the question why? Why so many. I think I worded the question wrong, not why people leave the churches, ask why people come to churches? You might be shocked with the answers you get. If you come to church for the wrong reasons you might get what you come for, but you will be empty, and dull inside, and might end up leaving. I’ve seen this pattern too long, what is the other side to this pattern.
This is my advice for you, is that there is another side. The side were you come to Christ find out who you are, a sinner, in desperate need of a Savior. Next you get friends that help you along the way. My main point in my advice does not stop there, the problem with Christianity, is that we stop there. My encouragement to you is go farther and beyond that. I want you to find yourself in the Body of Christ; its easier to leave when you’re just sitting in the back, try leaving when you’re preaching. That sounds great, but how to get there, SEEK GOD WITH ALL YOUR BEING. Read the Bible, like your daily food, like you will die if you don’t read it. The results to this will be, God will open up to you more and more and you will find your place in His Body. Next, serve Him like you love Him with all your heart, girls don’t like a gift that you got and it didn’t cost you anything. Try, going someplace, and get something so rare that only you found and give it to her, her face would light up. The same is true about God, when you love Him, you will do anything to make Him happy, I’m speaking from experience, and when He’s happy everyone is happy. You can only serve Him with all your heart, when you love Him with all your heart.
For the closing, the results to all of this, is the Blessings from God, that every person wants, but doesn’t know how to get. Read Genesis 35:1-10. Last thing, I would like to say a life story. Last year, I got my Baptism Certificate and was going to hang it up in my room. I looked at it, and I saw a black spot, and like most i wanted the black spot off. Two hours later, my Certificate was all messed up, this story is always hard for me to say, but has an amazing point. My thoughts after, were how could I mess up like this, that’s when God stopped me. He said you care so much about a piece of paper, what about the promise you gave Me, about the holiness, and purity, clean conscience. My point here is forget the paper if the life is messed up, my paper is gone, but my life is battling every day. May God Richly Bless You As You Serve Him In Obedience.
How can I leave the Graduates without an advice? This will be much shorter. Remember in life you never stop learning. Proverbs 1:8. The advice is simple, yet complicated. 1 Samuel 3:1-4. If you read the verses, they are about Samuel, how he at an early age, started, not only hearing, but also obeying the voice of the Lord. If you miss this in life you miss everything that comes with this. I really would love to see our youth, a people who desire to seek the face of the Lord, and will not take no for an answer. It all starts with us, learning to hear Gods voice, so that is my short advice for the graduates, Congratulations.
May God Continue Blessing You, And Our Youth.
Your Brother In Christ,
Nikolay
